The Grand National at Aintree in Liverpool is ultimately one of the most popular race meetings in the horse racing calendar, where thousands attend over three days.

The style stakes are high here, particularly on day two, or Ladies Day as it’s called, where women go all out with their outfits hoping to clinch the annual Style Award. So let us take you through the Grand National dress code to help you prepare for one of the best horse racing events in the UK if you are lucky to have a ticket for next year!

What is the dress code for the Grand National Dress Code?

So what is the Grand National Dress Code? Unlike Royal Ascot, there is no official dress code for the Grand National however sports clothes and fancy dress are not permitted.  But that doesn’t mean you can’t still dress to impress!! It’s worth bearing in mind that the event does fall in April, so the weather can dictate what you chose to wear.

Aintree Grand National Women’s Dress Code

Although there is no official Grand National Women’s dress code, people still use this popular race meeting as an opportunity to wear their favourite occasion-wear.Similar to attending a wedding, opt for a demure outfit. A dress which falls below the knee, a maxi length or a jumpsuit would all be a perfect choice!

Ladies Day, which falls on day two of the festival,  traditionally sees thousands of racegoers dress up in their best outfits ahead of the big race, the Grand National  the following day. Ladies Day allows women to wear colourful dresses and hats and organisers say they want to “inspire racegoers to dress to impress and show off their personality through style”, channelling the fashion icon Coco Chanel.

It isn’t a must to wear a hat or a factinator but they are frequently worn and many people experiment with different styles and shapes. So why not try something a bit different for 2021 and move away from the traditional hat?

Aintree Grand National Men’s Dress Code

For many race meets, and especially the Grand National, a suit is the most popular choice for men. One that is grey or navy and a good fit is perfect. As there is no official Aintree Grand National men’s dress code many people see this as a chance to mix and match pieces,  injecting in some colour allowing you to show off your personality by being a bit more creative. Footwear should be smart, so shoes, not trainers and remember sports clothes and fancy dress are not permitted.
